ASSISTANT
INSTRUCTOR
The NAUI Assistant Instructor (AI) program is designed to introduce candidates to the basics of diving instruction. It is the entry level leadership certification in NAUI. AI's assist during dive classes under the direct supervision of an instructor. In what is essentially an apprenticeship, they learn the dynamics of dive instruction while enhancing individual student development and expanding an instructor's span of control. They often serve as in-water demonstrators for skills the instructor is teaching. For that reason, and because they are NAUI leaders, AI's must have superior water skills. They also need in-depth working knowledge of dive physics, physiology, environment, dive tables and diving equipment. They will be called upon to present these topics to actual classes. Working as an AI is a great experience on the road to becoming a NAUI Instructor.

Certification as a NAUI Master Scuba Diver or its equivalent, and certification as a Rescue Diver. Divers who follow the equivalency route must pass the NAUI Master Scuba Diver exam with a minimum score of 75%.
